Editorial Standards

Purpose of the catalogue

The EATSB Public Domain Literature Library exists to provide readers with curated access to historically significant scientific and educational works that are in the public domain. Our editorial team prepares explanatory notes, reading guides, and contextual information to help readers understand and appreciate these texts. We aim to support independent reading and research, not to replace the original works.

Scope and selection

The library currently contains 85 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Works are chosen for their relevance to the history of science, education, and intellectual culture, with emphasis on physics, mechanics, electricity, and related fields. Selection favours works that exhibit clear pedagogical intent, distinctive rhetorical strategies, or important contributions to scientific discourse. We do not claim to represent every significant work in these areas; rather, we offer a focused collection that rewards careful reading.

Source attribution

All books in the catalogue are sourced from Project Gutenberg, a trusted repository of public-domain texts. Each record includes the publisher as Project Gutenberg. We do not host or redistribute the texts themselves; our pages provide editorial content that links to the Project Gutenberg editions. Users should verify the public-domain status of works in their own jurisdictions.

Bibliographic records

Each book entry includes the title, author(s), publisher, and keywords. The title as displayed may include editorial additions such as '— Reading Notes' or '— Themes and Context' to indicate the nature of our accompanying note. Author names are given as they appear in the source metadata, with birth and death years where available. Keywords are reproduced from Project Gutenberg's subject headings and are intended to aid discovery, not to constitute a complete classification.

Category assignment

Books are grouped into three categories: Mechanics, Electricity Magnetism, and General Physics. These categories are editorial constructs designed to help readers navigate the collection. They are not mutually exclusive nor do they represent definitive scholarly classifications. Some books could reasonably fit into more than one category; the assignment reflects the emphasis of the accompanying editorial note.
